Book a cruise on the National Trust’s Victorian, steam-powered yacht gondola. Follow in the footsteps of Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons and take to the water yourselves in a rowing boat, canoe or kayak from the boating centre in Coniston, 6 miles away. Afterwards, pause in one of the village’s pubs to enjoy a meal made with fresh Cumbrian produce. Grizedale Forest, 9 miles away, is a great place to go walking, cycling or mountain biking.
