Positive: Upon the High Street stands a cottage fair, A modest dwelling, yet with charm so sweet That weary travellers, passing by, would swear They’d found a gentle haven for their feet. Close by the shops it lies, and at its side A merchant’s house of sundry wares doth dwell, Where one may swiftly fetch what’s needs supplied, And fill the larder full and hearty well. Within, the rooms are deck’d with comely grace; The walls and furnishings in beauty’s keep. Behold — a tiny Christmas tree in place, Whose lights like faerie stars in winter peep. Yet tread with care, for floors do rise and fall, And little steps lurk where the shadows play; A cautious foot is best, lest thou shouldst call For aid and rue the fateful stumble’s sway. The staircase, narrow as a miser’s heart, Is no fit climb for elders faint of limb; For them, ‘twould prove a labour to depart, Or mount its winding path both steep and slim. The main room wants for curtains, which is sore, For daylight pries as though a gossip bold. And sadness too — no WiFi lies in store, No magic threads to bind the young and old. Yet still, this cottage hath a homely air, A place of warmth, despite its flaws confessed. If thou seek’st refuge, gentle, quaint, and rare, Here may thy travel-weary soul find rest.
