Tucked away but within easy walking of Moffat’s famous double high street this is the perfect place to explore this stunning area. As a base Riverdale is exceptionally well located as you can plan your days in each direction. Set in the heart of Upper Annandale amidst the beautiful southern upland hills, Moffat is an attractive former coaching town and wool centre symbolised by the ram in the high street. Moffat was once a popular and fashionable spa town. The Georgian grandeur is testament to this. The spring was discovered in 1633 and Robert Burns was amongst those who came to take the waters. It is said that James Boswell was restored to health with the waters. The town lays claim to the narrowest street in Scotland and the shortest street in the UK. The Star Hotel, at only 20 feet across, is the narrowest hotel in Britain if not the world! Head north on the scenic route to Edinburgh climbing up the Devil’s Beef Tub passing the source of the mighty Tweed and Broughton, birthplace of John Buchan and continuing on as the road wends its way through the beautiful Tweed Valley to the capital. The area is a walker’s paradise amongst the gentle rolling hills of Annandale and Eskdale where remote lochs glisten and rivers thread their way through the grandeur of this stunning scenery. The Grey Mare’s Tail and Loch Skeen is highly recommended. The Grey Mare’s tail is the 5th highest waterfall in the UK. The town has seven marked walking routes and also plays host to the Moffat Ramblers Walking Festival. The drive from Moffat to Selkirk is highly recommended and the views are magnificent. Firstly stock up on Moffat toffee and head eastwards. This road is one of the finest A road drives in the UK. Passing the Grey Mare’s Tail head for the Tibbie Shiels Inn which is perfectly set between the lovely Loch of the Lowes and St Mary’s Loch. Here is where Scott and the shepherd poet James Hogg used to meet. Moffat has a fine moorland 18 hole golf course and for fishermen provides both lochan and river fishing. Moffat is so easily reached and it is believed to be situated one mile south of the centre of Britain! Both Glasgow and Edinburgh can be reached in under an hour and Carlisle is around forty minutes to the south
